Senator Durbin is lying to save face. Our bill is a total ban on buying stocks for members, their spouses, and dependent children. It also includes a simple voter ID provision to ensure only citizens can vote. Democrats said they support both of these measures. But they lied.

Senate Democrats just killed a bill that required photo voter ID and banned members of Congress from trading stocks. The vote was 53-47. Why?

BREAKING: Senate Democrats just TANKED the Stop Insider Trading Act that also required voter ID for federal elections — 53-47, with EVERY SINGLE Democrat voting against these common-sense measures that are extremely popular with the American people. The bill would have BLOCKED members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children from buying new individual stocks while the member was in office. Remember this when you VOTE in November!

BREAKING: Senate Democrats have just blocked a congressional stock trading ban bill that had a voter ID attachment to it requiring photo ID to vote in federal elections. The "Stop Insider Trading Act", which passed the House with the help of 13 Democrats, just failed a procedural vote along party lines in the Senate by a vote of 53 to 47, with every Senate Democrat voting against it. It needed 60 votes to advance. The legislation would ban members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependent children from purchasing new individual stocks, and would required photo ID to vote in federal elections. This was a way for Republicans to get Democrats on record on voter ID before the mid term elections, something that Sen. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said yesterday is "supported broadly by the American people." But Democrats accuse Republicans of tanking an otherwise popular, bipartisan topic (congressional stock trading) by attaching voter ID to it, with Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer saying "All they really want is to score political points before they head home to campaign." Dems also argue the stock bill didn't go far enough, as the President was exempt and it allowed lawmakers to keep and sell their existing stocks.

Your bill doesn't even ban Members of Congress from owning and selling stocks. And it lets Donald Trump—who has made more stock trades than all of Congress combined—continue to trade as much as he wants. This bill is a sham. Try again.
