If Manchester City can establish that the Etihad sponsorship payments came from the Abu Dhabi government rather than Abu Dhabi United Group, then the Premier League has to address the actual rule being applied. State involvement in a sponsorship does not automatically make the sponsorship illegal. The crucial question is whether the funding arrangement breached the Premier League’s rules that applied at the time. You cannot turn “the Abu Dhabi government was involved” into “Manchester City committed a financial breach” without proving the specific rule was broken. Show the evidence. Show the rule. Then prove the breach. That’s how this case should be decided.

The Treasury Committee Chair has written to JP Marks, Permanent Secretary of HMRC, about any taxi implications of the Premier League's investigation into Manchester City Football Club Ltd. On Tuesday, the Premier League published a report which concludes that "well over 100 individual breaches of the Premier League Rules across the course of many seasons" have taken place. Dame Meg Hillier MP asks for reassurance that the department is 'seized of the importance' of the case and poses a number of questions to Mr Marks. These include whether HMRC is aware of the findings and if an unredacted copy of the report has been requested by the department. The Chair also asks for an overview of HMRC work around the taxation of remuneration and any other potential tax avoidance within football clubs. Statement via @Lawton_Times.

Downing Street spokesperson: “As the Prime Minister [Andy Burnham] made clear, the initial judgement [of #ManCity from the Premier League] is serious and there can’t be any suggestion that anyone is above the rules. "He also stressed it's an ongoing independent process. It's essential it's allowed to run its course and the outcome respected. If wrongdoing is established, those responsible should face appropriate consequences..." [via @hzeffman]

Our lawyers are in disbelief that Manchester City will argue the payments were made by the Abu Dhabi government rather than the owners. They fell off their chairs in shock 😳
