Penalty row ends the Sharks and Mombasa United play-off The second leg between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United did not finish. A penalty in the 62nd minute sent players and fans onto the pitch at Ulinzi Sports Complex. Referee John Sulwe left under escort. The spot-kick was never taken. This was the FKF Premier League promotion play-off. The winner takes the last place in the 2026/27 top flight. Sharks finished 16th in the previous Premier League. Mombasa United finished third in the National Super League. A court fight over the new promotion rules delayed the season. The two clubs then settled the place in a two-legged play-off. You watched a league place move off the field after the football stopped. How the score stood Mombasa United arrived in Nairobi with a 2-1 lead from the first leg at Mbaraki Sports Club on 1 October. On Tuesday, 6 October, the visitors scored first. Daily Nation reported a sixth-minute header by Jamal Messi from a corner. Other outlets named Christian Lubulu as the scorer of that early goal. Sharks levelled from a free kick by captain Patillah Omoto after Mohammed Hussein was fouled outside the box. Douglas Omanga then put the hosts ahead before half-time. He finished a pass from Eustace Chisala after goalkeeper Williams Chigozie came off his line. The half-time score was 2-1 to Sharks. The aggregate was 3-3. The stoppage In the 62nd minute Sulwe pointed to the spot before a Mombasa corner was delivered. He ruled that a Mombasa player had been pulled by the shirt inside the box. Sharks players confronted him. Fans left the stands and entered the pitch. Marshals and Kenya Defence Forces officers moved the referee into the stadium bowl after he was assaulted. Police then cleared fans, media and other attendees. Reports place the abandonment between the 62nd and 66th minute. The scoreboard did not change. Sharks led 2-1 on the day. The tie stayed 3-3 on aggregate. A converted penalty would have put Mombasa United 4-3 ahead on aggregate. What the rule book says Article 3.5.6 of the FKF Rules and Regulations states that a club forfeits a match abandoned because of the misconduct of its members or supporters. The FKF Disciplinary Committee now has the file. Gor Mahia vice chairperson Sally Bolo asked which football body has the power to make a binding call on the tie. The winner was due to open the new season at home against Kakamega Homeboyz this Sunday. That fixture cannot be confirmed until FKF rules on the abandoned match. What you should track 1. Whether FKF treats the abandonment as a forfeit against Sharks under Article 3.5.6 2. Whether the committee orders a replay, awards the tie to Mombasa United, or records the score as it stood 3. Any charges against players, officials or the club for the assault on the referee 4. The status of the Sunday opener against Kakamega Homeboyz 5. What happens next after yesterday’s Kariobangi Sharks vs Mombasa United incident? 1. The case is expected to be placed before the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee, chaired by Peter Kamau. 2. The committee is expected to sit as soon as possible, potentially today or by tomorrow, to assess the events using the match officials’ report, security reports and input from the CAF Safety and Security Officers who were at the venue. 3. Once all the reports and circumstances surrounding the abandonment have been reviewed, the committee will issue its decision. 4. One possible outcome is for Kariobangi Sharks to be sanctioned for the abandonment, with Mombasa United awarded the match. Such a decision would effectively earn Mombasa United promotion to the Kenyan Premier League. 5. FKF currently has no operational Disciplinary and Appeals Committees. If Sharks contest the decision, they could therefore seek recourse through the Sports Disputes Tribunal or the High Court. 6. Should Sharks choose not to challenge the decision, Mombasa United would take their place in the Kenyan Premier League, with Sharks dropping to the National Super League.

One idea mooted - and which a club source found "merit" in - was to apply a "tariff-based system", whereby #ManCity's past Premier League positions would be altered via a points deduction. Rival clubs could then be paid compensation by @ManCity based on where they would have finished vs where they did. [@LauraScott__/@SamiMokbel_BBC/@ShamoonHafez]

[🟢] NEW: At least four Premier League clubs believe relegation alone would not be enough punishment for Manchester City if their appeal fails. Some club executives favour points deductions across multiple seasons and transfer bans covering several windows. One senior club source also wants City stripped of their titles, with the honours left vacant rather than awarded to other clubs. [@BBCSport] #LFC
