   Yesterday, I introduced @FungoLabs and its idea of bringing privacy to NFTs. Today, I want to look at the technology that makes this possible. It’s called Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE), and it’s one of the most interesting parts of what Fungo is building with Zama. Normally, when a smart contract needs to work with information, that information has to be available for the computation. On a public blockchain, this can mean exposing data that the owner might prefer to keep private. FHE approaches this differently. It allows computations to happen directly on encrypted information without first revealing the original data. Imagine I give you two locked boxes. One contains the number 7, and the other contains 5. You cannot open either box, but you have a special machine that can add the numbers inside them. You put both boxes into the machine, and it produces another locked box containing 12. You never needed to see the original numbers to perform the calculation. That’s a simplified way of understanding what FHE makes possible. In technical terms: enc(7) + enc(5) = enc(12) The result remains encrypted. Now, what does this have to do with Fungo? Fungo uses Zama’s FHEVM to build encrypted NFTs on Ethereum. This means the smart contract can work with an NFT’s hidden information without reading the actual values. For example, Fungo Genesis NFTs have an encrypted essence containing a class, four stats and an element. Those attributes don’t have to be exposed for everyone to inspect. The interesting thing is that the encrypted information isn’t useless or locked away from every possible interaction. It can still be used in computations. Think about a game where two players have hidden character stats. A smart contract could calculate the outcome of a duel using those encrypted stats without either player revealing their actual values. That’s a very different experience from a game where everyone can inspect every player’s attributes before competing. And this is why FHE matters beyond Fungo. It creates room for applications where information can remain private while still being useful on a public blockchain. Zama provides the underlying FHE technology, while Fungo uses it to explore encrypted NFTs, private attributes and new gaming possibilities. I find this particularly interesting because blockchain has always been associated with transparency. But transparency doesn’t necessarily mean every piece of information must be exposed. Sometimes, the ability to keep something private while still using it is just as important. That’s the idea behind FHE, and it’s a big part of what makes Fungo worth following.
